Amazon Expands Drone Delivery to Nearly 500 U.S. Cities

Amazon announced on Wednesday a sweeping expansion of its Prime Air drone delivery service, with plans to reach nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026. According to the company, this represents a sixfold increase over its current footprint, marking the transition of drone delivery from a controlled experiment into mainstream logistics.

The expansion was detailed in an official blog post on Amazon's website, which outlined that Prime Air will offer millions of items at everyday low prices with delivery as fast as 30 minutes. The service uses Amazon's proprietary Detect-and-Avoid system, which enables drones to independently monitor airspace, identify obstacles such as power lines, buildings, and birds, and make real-time navigation and landing decisions without pilot intervention.

From lab experiment to national infrastructure

The Prime Air drones are octocopter vehicles with a payload capacity of up to 5 pounds (approximately 2.3 kg), designed to fly at speeds of about 50 mph at an altitude of 400 feet. The current generation represents a significant evolution from the prototypes Amazon first unveiled in 2019 — at that time, the drones carried packages of up to 5 pounds but were limited to a top speed of 20 mph and required human supervisors on the ground for each flight.

Federal regulatory approval was a critical milestone in this expansion. In 2024, the Federal Aviation Administration granted Amazon Part 135 certification, enabling regular commercial drone operations including night flights and beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) operations. This was a watershed moment: prior to that certification, testing was confined to restricted areas with ground-based spotters monitoring each flight. Now Amazon can operate continuously and autonomously across entire metropolitan regions.

The service began as a highly limited pilot in Irvine, California, in 2023, and gradually expanded to neighboring neighborhoods in Orange County, Dallas (Texas), Kirkland (Washington), and Westlake Village (California) throughout 2024 and 2025. The jump to 500 cities marks the definitive shift from a pilot program to a nationwide-scale operation.

The race against Walmart

Amazon's expansion comes at a moment of fierce competition with Walmart, which has also invested heavily in drone delivery and local partnerships. Walmart has struck agreements with Zipline, a drone delivery company headquartered in Delaware, to bring packages to rural residents in at least eight states. Walmart also operates its own fleet of drones in partnership with SkyBox Delivery while testing foot-delivery for short distances from its physical stores.

This rivalry is not just about speed but geographic coverage. Amazon already operates more than 500 fulfillment centers across the U.S., while Walmart counts over 4,700 stores that can serve as mini-distribution hubs for last-mile delivery. Amazon's strategy of using drones for the first mile — from fulfillment center to customer door — complements its ground network, while Walmart attempts to invert the model: deliveries that begin at the nearest store.

What changes for consumers

For Prime members, the expansion means that select items — currently including convenience products such as snacks, over-the-counter medications, pet supplies, and small electronics — will become available for 30-minute delivery in a much broader geographic range. Amazon has not disclosed details about operational cost per delivery at larger scale, but industry estimates suggest that the cost per drone delivery remains significantly higher than conventional van delivery.

Amazon's drone business model rests on two pillars: fast delivery as a differentiated Prime benefit, and reduced reliance on third-party gig workers during peak hours. In areas where ground logistics face bottlenecks — such as low-density suburban regions where each delivery requires several miles of travel — drones offer a scalability advantage that vans cannot match.

Regulatory and safety challenges

The expansion also faces significant regulatory hurdles. Although the FAA has granted partial certifications, the agency continues to impose maximum altitude restrictions, no-fly zones near airports, and risk-mapping requirements for each operational area. In 2026, the FAA is working with a new Low Altitude Integration Platform (LAIP), which aims to simultaneously track hundreds of drones operating in the same region.

Public safety concerns remain sensitive. The noise generated by drones, the risk of mechanical failure over populated areas, and the possibility of malicious interception are topics debated in municipal councils across the country. Some municipalities have already imposed stricter nighttime noise limits on drones, which could affect operating hours in certain jurisdictions.

Amazon has acknowledged these challenges and stated that it will invest in lighter composite materials, batteries with higher energy density, and redundant navigation systems to reduce the probability of incidents. The company is also collaborating with NASA through the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Traffic Management (UTM) program, which seeks to create drone traffic control infrastructure compatible with large-scale operations.

With 500 cities under coverage, the question becomes whether drone delivery will become as commonplace as ground delivery, or whether weight and regulatory restrictions will keep the service a premium niche. What we see today is the transition of a promising technology into real infrastructure — and the next chapter will determine whether drones replace delivery workers or complement an increasingly hybrid network.
