Comcast introduced three new home surveillance modes — "Home Watch," "Away Watch," and "Dark Watch" (a night/sleep mode) — allowing users to enable or disable detection based on their activities. The feature is opt-in by default, meaning users can choose to turn the functionality on or off through the Xfinity Internet app.

The free tier (Xfinity Shield Select) is already available. A paid tier, Xfinity Shield Select Plus, at US$ 15 per month, includes an improved indoor camera with AI-powered smart alerts for people, pets, vehicles, and packages. Comcast also emphasizes that the feature is being launched at no additional hardware cost — the company is leveraging its existing base of advanced Wi-Fi gateways already deployed in customers' homes.

The hidden cost: home surveillance and law enforcement data sharing

The most concerning aspect of the technology is not the feature itself but the privacy agreement that accompanies it. Comcast explicitly states in its terms of service that it may disclose information generated by Wi-Fi Motion to third parties without prior notification to the user in connection with law enforcement investigations, legal disputes in which Comcast is a party, or court orders. This means authorities could potentially determine whether someone was home at specific times — and that Comcast itself may be compelled to provide those data without the customer's knowledge.

For privacy-conscious users, several mitigation strategies exist. The simplest approach involves using a personal router and disabling Wi-Fi on Comcast's equipment, though this may not be feasible for all service plans. Some users suggest physical solutions like Faraday cages or RF-blocking materials around ISP equipment. However, these technical solutions face limitations: even with custom routers, ISPs can still monitor internet traffic patterns and device connections. The most effective protection combines personal networking equipment with encrypted VPN connections for all internet traffic.

The broader context: Wi-Fi 7 and the era of environmental sensing

Comcast's move reflects a broader shift in Wi-Fi technology. The upcoming Wi-Fi 7 standard includes native motion detection capabilities, with features like ultra-wide 320 MHz channels and Multi-Link Operation specifically designed to enhance detection accuracy. Many modern devices from Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm already possess the hardware capabilities for human presence detection, even if the software is not yet activated.

Radio-based sensing technology has begun expanding beyond Wi-Fi. ADT recently acquired the company that invented Wi-Fi motion sensing technology in a transaction signaling the security company's intention to transform existing residential infrastructure into surveillance systems. Linksys has already implemented a motion tracking system on its mesh routers that works with other smart home devices, and Philips has demonstrated how Zigbee light bulbs could be transformed into motion sensors with a single firmware update.

The fundamental question that remains is: when residential internet infrastructure begins detecting movements, heartbeats, and breathing patterns in customers' homes, who truly owns that data? Comcast answers that it is the customers, provided they activate the feature. But the reality is that once the data flows to the company's servers, the user's effective control over who else can access it — particularly authorities and third-party entities — dissolves into a fog of terms of service that no one reads.
