The European Union fined Google $1 billion for anticompetitive practices involving its search engine and Google Play Store. The decision marks another chapter in the long battle between the tech giant and European regulators.
Google has accumulated over $8 billion in EU fines since 2017. The $1 billion figure is relatively small for a company with $300B in annual revenue, but the pattern is what worries: the EU keeps finding new ways to frame Google's practices as illegal.
The timing is particularly sensitive: Google is negotiating DMA specifications to open Android to competing AI assistants. A fresh fine doesn't help Google's argument that it's "cooperating" with regulators.
