The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has proposed banning the sale of drones equipped with LiDAR, a technology the agency itself had already approved in widely sold models. The measure would directly hit consumer drones from DJI, such as the Air 3S and Mini 5 Pro, which use LiDAR for obstacle detection and collision avoidance.
LiDAR — short for light detection and ranging — uses laser pulses to map the surroundings, the same principle used in self-driving cars and precision scanners. In consumer drones, the technology has become standard in safety features: it is what lets a drone 'see' a tree branch or a power line and dodge it automatically. That is why the proposal is surprising: banning LiDAR effectively means phasing out one of the main safety layers built into modern drones.
The agency's argument is national security risk. The FCC classifies LiDAR as 'military-grade' technology and wants to add it to the so-called Covered List, a roster of communications equipment that the executive branch deemed an unacceptable risk. The list already included foreign-made components; the novelty is the attempt to apply the restriction retroactively to products approved and sold before the rule.
Beyond LiDAR, the proposal targets other technologies: thermal cameras, aerosol systems, and even the swarms used in drone light shows. The scope is broad and affects both foreign manufacturers and civilian applications that have nothing to do with military use. Photographers, videomakers, and companies that rely on drones for inspections would lose tools considered essential.
The most delicate point is retroactivity. Normally, the FCC approves equipment and then regulates new models. Here, the agency is trying to pull from circulation devices that were already legally on sale, which sparks a legal debate about regulatory reliance: how do you plan a business or a purchase if the authority can reverse its own approval? Experts note that such measures often face challenges in court.
There is also an undeniable geopolitical component. DJI dominates the global consumer drone market, and the proposal comes amid growing US–China tension in the technology sector. Banning Chinese-origin components in the name of national security is a recurring tactic — from chips to 5G networks — and now it reaches drones.
The process is still in the public comment phase, with a window open until September 2. Before any final ban, the FCC must hear from industry, users, and manufacturers themselves. In practice, the decision will calibrate how much risk the agency is willing to accept in the name of national security — and also the price civilians will pay for it. Someone who bought a drone last week, for instance, could wake up with a device that loses regulatory support, which calls into question the predictability of the entire civil flight equipment market. This debate is not purely regulatory: it is also economic and operational, affecting everyone from small photography studios to large industrial inspection operations that built their workflows around equipment now considered standard. The uncertainty, while the comment window is open, is already beginning to show in the market, with resellers and buyers hesitating over the risk of a product that could lose validity overnight.
