God of War Laufey Hits PS5 in February 2027 — And Kratos Isn't Retiring Anytime Soon

Sony Santa Monica Studio used San Diego Comic-Con 2026 to make the announcement fans had been waiting months for: God of War Laufey, the next chapter in the acclaimed franchise, launches on February 16, 2027, exclusively for PlayStation 5. Creative director Cory Barlog took the stage to confirm the date and reveal details that go far beyond the next game.

The title "Laufey" is no random choice. In Norse mythology, Laufey is the mother of Loki — an enigmatic figure who rarely appears in traditional stories but whose influence is felt across the entire mythology. The name choice suggests the game may explore Loki's origins and his connection to the world of the giants (Jotunheim), something the previous Norse games only touched upon. For those who followed Kratos and Atreus/Loki's journey since God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök (2022), the promise of diving deeper into this story is compelling.

But Comic-Con delivered more than just a release date. Barlog confirmed that Kratos will return in a subsequent game after Laufey — a statement that puts to rest rumors that the Ghost of Sparta might retire or be replaced. Additionally, Sony revealed that a remake of the original Greek trilogy is in development, opening the possibility for a new generation of players to experience the epic journey that began in 2005 on PlayStation 2.

Sony's strategy is clear: God of War is no longer a trilogy with a defined ending, but a perennial franchise on par with its biggest heavyweights. With three development fronts — Laufey, the next Kratos-led game, and the Greek trilogy remake — Santa Monica Studio is operating at a scale few first-party studios can sustain.

The announcement also raises interesting questions about the franchise's future. If Kratos remains the protagonist, where can the narrative go after Laufey? Norse mythology was explored across two monumental games; could the series migrate to other pantheons — Egyptian, Mayan, Japanese — as fans have speculated for years? Or does Sony intend to weave the different mythologies into a single narrative arc?

With a February 2027 release date, God of War Laufey has roughly a year and a half of development ahead. If it follows the quality standard set by its predecessors, it could very well be another Game of the Year contender.

What makes the Comic-Con announcement particularly significant is the implicit message about the franchise's future. Since the 2018 reboot, God of War has sold over 25 million copies globally, cementing itself as one of Sony's most valuable intellectual properties. The Greek trilogy remake suggests the company wants to introduce the complete saga to a new generation — many players who entered the series through the Norse reboot have never experienced the original PlayStation 2 and 3 games. At the same time, the confirmation that Kratos remains the protagonist in future games points to a bold direction: instead of ending his journey or passing the torch to Atreus, Sony is betting that the character has potential for decades of stories, much like Mario, Link, or Master Chief. For fans who have grown up with Kratos since 2005, this is cause for celebration — the Ghost of Sparta is not retiring anytime soon.
