Gemini tops 1 billion users, becoming Google's fastest-growing product ever

The Gemini app has officially crossed the mark of 1 billion monthly active users, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced on Tuesday (August 11) via X. The milestone makes the AI assistant the 14th Google product to pass the billion-user mark and, according to the executive, the fastest-growing product in the company's entire history.

The figure puts Gemini in an increasingly contested club: OpenAI's ChatGPT reached 1 billion monthly users back in June. The difference is that while the rival was essentially born alone inside a chat app, Gemini reaches this level riding Google's distribution machine — integrated into Search, Workspace, Android, and its own dedicated app. "We're keeping pace with ChatGPT," the company said, without hiding the ambition.

The usage numbers help explain the trajectory. According to Google, 63% of Gemini users talk directly to the assistant using the voice feature — and busy parents are 43% more likely to use voice for everyday tasks. One in five Gemini Live interactions goes beyond voice: people use live camera feeds and screen sharing to solve problems in real time, behavior especially popular among do-it-yourselfers. The app also generates more than 150 million images every day and already counts more than 100 million active users on iOS.

The announcement lands right after the second-quarter earnings, when Google was celebrating just over 950 million monthly Gemini users — and revealing that daily active users had tripled over the past year. The jump, then, is not just marketing: the base really did grow fast between one measurement and the next. For comparison, Google's AI Mode in Search — a separate experience from the app — has also already topped 1 billion monthly users worldwide.

The company also took the moment to mention the arrival of Gemini 3.5 Flash, a model designed to improve coding tasks and autonomous AI agents. It's a clear signal that Google wants to take Gemini beyond chat: the assistant is increasingly the engine of agents that execute tasks, not just answer questions.

The immediate context is the "Made by Google" event, expected in the coming weeks, when the company is set to present a new generation of Pixel devices with expanded AI features. A base of 1 billion users, in that scenario, works as a launchpad — the bigger the assistant's audience, the more attractive it becomes to developers and to the hardware distribution strategy.

There is, of course, a question the milestone doesn't answer: user numbers are not synonymous with revenue or loyalty. ChatGPT has already shown that billions of visits can coexist with monetization models still under construction, and Google — which historically turns scale into money more easily than most — will have to prove it can do the same with Gemini without cannibalizing its search business. For now, the most concrete fact is simple: in less than three years since its launch, the assistant has become one of the largest digital properties on the planet. Reaching the milestone took less than three years — a pace that shows how quickly an assistant can become infrastructure when it is woven into the operating system, the search engine, and the office suite millions already use every day.
