Google renames NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook, deepens AI ecosystem integration

The facts: Google announced Thursday that its AI note-taking app NotebookLM is being renamed to Gemini Notebook. The rebranding reflects Google's strategy to unify its AI products under the Gemini umbrella, though the app will remain standalone.

Context: Originally launched as Project Tailwind in May 2023, NotebookLM quickly became one of Google's most innovative AI products. In just over three years, the tool gained features like turning notes into AI-generated podcasts, narrated slideshows, and TikTok-style clips. Recent updates had already started connecting notebooks to the Gemini app and AI Mode — the conversational experience inside Google Search.

Alongside the new name, Google is rolling out a feature announced last month that connects Gemini Notebook to a secure cloud computer, allowing users to write and execute code directly from the app. It's available for Google AI Ultra and Workspace business subscribers, coming to Pro users in the coming weeks.

Analysis: The rename is more than cosmetic. Google is clearly building a cohesive AI ecosystem where Gemini serves as the unifying layer across search, notes, productivity, and code. Turning NotebookLM into Gemini Notebook signals that the product is no longer an experiment — it's a strategic pillar. Integration with AI Mode in Search also suggests Google wants the app to be a starting point for deeper research, not just a smart notepad.

What to watch: Will Gemini Notebook remain independent or eventually be folded directly into Gemini? The cloud computing feature may attract developers and researchers, but the paywall limits reach. How original NotebookLM users — who appreciated the tool precisely for its simplicity — react will be an important indicator.
