Gritt exits stealth with $32M for robots that build solar plants

Solar plant construction is about to get a robotic boost. Startup Gritt, founded by Carnegie Mellon-trained robotics engineers, exited stealth on July 21, 2026 with $32 million in total funding — a $26 million Series A led by Obvious Ventures, with participation from Union Square Ventures and Active Impact Investment.

The problem Gritt solves is simple to understand but hard to execute: solar panel installation is labor-intensive, and there is a growing shortage of skilled workers to meet global solar energy demand. A typical eight-person crew can install about 800 panels per day; with Gritt's robotic systems, the same crew can install between 3,000 and 4,000 panels daily.

Unlike competitors that build their own robots, Gritt uses off-the-shelf hardware — rented skidders and Kawasaki robotic arms — controlled by its AI models. The system starts with the heaviest task: unloading large glass solar panels, carrying them to metal frames, and positioning them with sub-millimeter accuracy for human workers to fasten.

The company already has two systems in the field and contracts to install 2.8 gigawatts of solar panels over the next 18 months, with customers among the top 10 US power construction companies. The ambition extends beyond solar — the name Gritt stands for 'generalizable robotics for infrastructure at scale and time' — robots that can be adapted for other types of construction.

The market is watching closely. Gritt competes with Luminous Robotics, Cosmic, and China's Trinabot, but its approach of using generic hardware with proprietary AI intelligence may give it an edge in scalability and cost. The company plans to have 48 systems operational in the next six months, a pace that, if maintained, could radically transform the speed of renewable infrastructure construction.
