Meta has withdrawn from a major tech industry renewable energy initiative while expanding its reliance on natural gas to power its AI data centers. The decision was reported by Engadget and confirmed by TechCrunch, which noted Meta has already contracted for 10 new natural gas plants since last year to meet AI cluster energy demand.
According to Engadget, Meta was one of the most vocal big tech companies on sustainability, with net-zero commitments and multi-million dollar solar and wind investments. But AI compute demand for Llama 4 training and metaverse data processing grew faster than renewable infrastructure could scale. The option for natural gas is an implicit admission that, in the short term, scalability won over sustainability.
TechCrunch added that Meta is not alone in this shift. Google, Microsoft, and Amazon are also expanding natural gas and other fossil fuel use to keep pace with AI growth, though none have publicly exited renewable initiatives as Meta did. The difference is that Meta was part of a specific 100 percent renewable energy program, making its exit more visible.
The most important data point, in this editor's view, is not Meta's decision itself. It is the signal it sends to the rest of the market. If Meta, with near-unlimited resources and world-class engineering talent, cannot scale AI on clean energy, smaller companies will not either. The environmental bill for the AI race is coming due, and it is not being paid with green currency.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), data center electricity consumption is set to double by 2028, driven primarily by AI model training and inference. Meta's move is particularly significant because the company was considered one of the most successful adopters of large-scale renewable energy. Meta had solar and wind contracts covering 100 percent of its global operational consumption, at least on paper. What the market is discovering is that exponential AI demand growth has created a gap that renewable energy contracts simply cannot fill in the short term.
For the tech sector as a whole, Meta's exit from the clean energy pact is a wake-up call. Net-zero pledges from Google, Microsoft, and Amazon are also under pressure. Microsoft has already admitted its emissions have increased substantially since 2020, driven by new data center construction for AI workloads. The dilemma is clear: either tech companies slow down their AI investments, which nobody wants to do, or they accept that climate goals will be delayed in the short term.
What to watch in the coming months: whether investor and activist pressure forces Meta to reverse course; whether the US government intervenes with energy regulation for data centers; and whether technologies like small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) can reach the market in time to mitigate the problem.
