What happens when an AI agent needs to pay for an API, buy cloud compute credits, or subscribe to a recurring service on behalf of a human user? Today, that transaction inevitably requires a human in the loop — typing a credit card number, confirming a password, authorizing the payment. Startup Natural wants to eliminate this bottleneck entirely.
The company, founded just a year ago, raised $30 million in an initial round to build a payment infrastructure designed specifically for autonomous AI agents. The core idea is that these agents can execute complete financial transactions — paying for APIs, acquiring services as needed, managing allocated budgets — without direct human intervention, operating within pre-established limits and rules configured by the user.
The market Natural is targeting is real and growing rapidly. Companies of all sizes are deploying AI agents for an increasingly broad range of functions: customer support, sales prospecting, data analysis, IT operations, and more. These agents, however, hit a fundamental bottleneck that limits their autonomy: today's financial infrastructure was designed exclusively for human-to-human or human-to-business transactions, not for autonomous software. Stripe, PayPal, and Adyen process payments efficiently, but they all require human approval for each transaction.
Natural proposes an additional layer of financial abstraction: digital accounts with pre-allocated budgets, virtual cards controlled entirely by API, and programmable authorization systems that agents themselves consume. In practice, it serves as a bridge between the traditional payments world and the emerging autonomous agent ecosystem — a financial middleware layer purpose-built for the AI economy.
The strategic question that remains is whether Stripe and its competitors will ignore this niche or build equivalent solutions. Recent history suggests established platforms are slow to notice and react to new market segments — that is exactly how Stripe itself grew, offering developer-friendly payment APIs that traditional banks did not provide. Natural is betting that the cycle can repeat itself, this time in the AI agent payments market.
Just as cloud computing demanded new billing and provisioning models, autonomous agents will require payment systems that operate without constant human oversight. If Natural executes well, it could become the Stripe of AI agents.
