The fact
Bloomberg reports that Apple is planning to launch the OLED iPad mini as early as October 2026. The device, codenamed J510, represents what Bloomberg calls "the biggest overhaul to the iPad mini in half a decade." In addition to the OLED display, the new model may feature a faster chip and a higher price — the current model has already risen to $599 after recent adjustments.
Context
The iPad mini hasn't received a significant update since 2021, when it gained the A15 chip and a thinner-bezel design. Since then, Apple has focused its OLED efforts on the iPad Pro (M4, 2024) and then the iPad Air. Now it's the mini's turn.
According to leaker yeux1122, however, the OLED display on the iPad mini will be limited to 60Hz — no ProMotion. This means that despite OLED technology, scrolling and animation smoothness will match the current model, without the 120Hz fluidity.
Bloomberg's report also reveals the complete iPad roadmap: entry-level iPad (J581) in Q1 2027, 11" and 13" iPad Air (J807 and J837) in spring 2027, and new iPad Pro models in the same period.
Analysis
Opting for OLED without ProMotion is a controversial decision. OLED brings deeper blacks, better contrast, and superior energy efficiency — real gains for media consumption and reading. But limiting to 60Hz in 2026, when even $300 smartphones offer 120Hz, seems like a cost-cutting measure that's hard to justify on a product that could cost $650+.
Apple appears to want to position the iPad mini as a premium content consumption device, but not so premium that it cannibalizes the iPad Pro. The absence of ProMotion creates precisely that differentiation.
Another issue is pricing. With the increase to $599 (already adjusted) and the addition of OLED, the iPad mini could approach $699 — iPad Air territory. For many consumers, the choice between an 8.3" OLED iPad mini and an 11" iPad Air will become increasingly less obvious.
What to watch
- Final pricing: $649 or $699 may be the starting point - ProMotion 60Hz vs 120Hz: confirm if there's any chance of 90Hz - Chip: could be A18 Pro or A19, depending on TSMC's timeline - 3rd-gen Apple Pencil should be announced alongside, with replaceable battery - Impact on competitors: Apple dominates the compact tablet market
