Samsung has decided to ban from its smart TV app store any app that shares a user's internet connection with strangers. The news, reported by TechCrunch this week, was confirmed by the company in an emailed statement: apps that share users' internet connections will be banned, and apps that already contain the functionality will be removed from the platform. Samsung has also started restricting new app registrations that use the technology, while working to identify and pull existing offenders from its store.
The trigger was an investigation by Mnemonic. By rooting a Samsung TV's software, the firm's Sand team gained deep access to the television's internals and analyzed all the network traffic flowing in and out of the set. The result exposed the problem: seemingly innocuous apps, downloaded by thousands of users, were using that TV's connection as a doorway for other people's traffic.
The numbers put the scale into perspective. Spur Intelligence analyzed 6,038 LG and Samsung smart TV apps and found residential proxy components in about 34% of them — more than 2,000 apps. The distribution is not uniform: 42.5% of LG's apps (webOS) carried this kind of SDK, while 26.9% of Samsung's apps (Tizen) contained the same component. Days earlier, LG had already announced it would begin suspending apps that turn TVs into residential proxy nodes — a sign this is an industry-wide problem, not one manufacturer's.
What exactly is a residential proxy? It is a service that routes third-party internet traffic through the IP addresses of ordinary homes. For whoever rents it, that traffic is valuable because it blurs the line between a real user and an automated agent. It allows services to bypass geo-blocking, dodge rate limits, commit ad fraud, and even hide the origin of malicious activity such as botnet traffic. By lending its connection without knowing, the TV owner becomes, in practice, an unwitting link in that chain — and it is their IP address, not the criminal's, that shows up in the logs.
The problem, however, is not limited to Samsung or LG sets. Devices like Amazon's Fire TV and the Roku boxes, equally popular, have faced the same kind of scrutiny. The practice of embedding residential proxy SDKs into seemingly trivial apps — utilities, games, media players — has spread across the streaming industry because it is cheap, easy to hide, and hard to detect for anyone who does not inspect network traffic as deeply as Mnemonic did.
For the user, the consequence goes beyond bandwidth consumption and security risk. The box sitting in the living room starts carrying a behavior nobody would accept in a browser or a smartphone: quietly handing your connection to strangers, without consent. That raises a broader question about privacy on connected TVs — a sector historically under-regulated, where terms of use tend to be long, vague, and rarely read.
Samsung's reaction is welcome, but it leaves open questions. If the platform only discovered the problem after researchers reverse-engineered a device, how many other apps are still out there running undetected? And more importantly, will affected users be told, compensated, or at least notified that their connection was being used? The lingering question is whether the TV app market will learn to treat a user's connection as untouchable — or whether oversight will keep depending on the work of independent researchers.
