The first images of the crater left on the Moon by a SpaceX rocket are finally here — and the camera that caught them belongs to a small South Korean probe nearly 400,000 kilometers from home.
In the dead of night on Wednesday (Aug. 5), the spent upper stage of a Falcon 9 slammed into the lunar surface at more than 8,000 kilometers per hour (5,000 mph), not far from the crater Einstein. The impact was invisible from Earth, because the crash site sat on the sunlit limb of the Moon. But South Korea's Danuri orbiter, also known as the Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (KPLO), happened to be in the right place, and its before-and-after photos, released by the Korea AeroSpace Administration (KASA) on Aug. 6, reveal a small, blackened crater carved into the regolith.
Danuri's journey began four years ago this week, fittingly aboard a Falcon 9 of its own. It took a few months to reach lunar orbit, where its initial one-year mission has already been extended twice, most recently through 2027. Along the way it has mapped the surface, hunted for water ice in permanently shadowed craters and tested deep-space communications. Now it can add a new line to its résumé: forensic photography of a human-made impact.
The culprit is the second stage of the Falcon 9 that, back in January 2025, carried two lunar landers toward the Moon: Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost, which touched down successfully in March, and ispace's Hakuto-R, which lost contact and crashed in June. On a normal mission, that stage would have burned up in Earth's atmosphere. On a lunar transfer trajectory, that was impossible — so the rocket became a piece of untracked space junk, condemned to drift until its orbit decayed into the surface.
Scientists were already watching. Astronomers using the Very Large Telescope in Chile caught a debris plume rising from the surface moments after the collision. Early estimates predicted a crater roughly 27 meters (90 feet) wide and up to 5 meters (16 feet) deep — a tiny dent, far too small to see from Earth even with a good telescope. Precise measurements haven't been released yet, but they should arrive in the coming days as orbiters like NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter pass over the site.
The scene recalls a simple analogy: an abandoned tin can adrift in space that finally strikes a building in the dead of night — no one witnesses the exact moment, but the scar remains. SpaceX acknowledged the incident, saying such impacts are rare but possible in these orbits, and that a controlled disposal maneuver is not always feasible. NASA chief Jared Isaacman offered perspective: meteoroids strike the Moon constantly, and impacts comparable to this one occur roughly every six days. In other words, nature does this all the time.
Even so, the episode is a warning for the Moon's golden age. Commercial landers, orbital stations and plans to mine resources are multiplying, and every one of those missions will produce debris. Left unattended, each piece becomes a crater waiting to happen. The irony is that Danuri itself has a date with the surface: in March 2028, it is expected to create its own impact crater on purpose.
The question that lingers is both simple and uncomfortable: as the Moon gets busier, who will keep order around our natural satellite?
