DoorDash Air Takes Flight: FAA Certification and In-House Drones Reshape Food Delivery

DoorDash just made one of its boldest moves in the last-mile wars. The company has secured FAA Part 135 air carrier certification — the regulatory green light to operate commercial drone deliveries — and launched DoorDash Air, a dedicated division that will design, build, and fly its own fleet of delivery drones.

Until now, DoorDash relied on external partnerships to test aerial delivery. The most prominent was with Wing, Alphabet's drone subsidiary, running pilots in Dallas-Fort Worth, Virginia, and as far as Australia. Those experiments proved the concept worked, but DoorDash has decided it doesn't want to outsource the future of its logistics.

With DoorDash Air, the company is bringing drone development entirely in-house at DoorDash Labs. The drones are billed as "American-designed and built" and purpose-engineered for food transport. Unlike generic cargo drones, these are being optimized for meal integrity — sealed packaging, temperature awareness, and flight routes that prioritize speed without compromising safety.

The aerial division doesn't replace DoorDash's fleet of Dot sidewalk robots. Instead, drones and robots form a complementary delivery ecosystem. Dots handle short trips in dense, flat urban areas, while drones take over longer routes or neighborhoods where terrain and obstacles make ground navigation impractical. The system will intelligently route each order to whichever mode fits best.

On the ground, DoorDash is building the infrastructure to make it all work. Restaurant handoff platforms will let staff load orders directly onto drones without human couriers ever touching the package. That cuts variable cost per delivery dramatically and shaves minutes off total order time.

This puts DoorDash on a collision course with other deep-pocketed players racing to own the skies. Amazon is already running Prime Air drone deliveries in select US and UK cities, and Walmart has partnered with Zipline and Flytrex. But DoorDash has a structural advantage: it's not a general retailer or a broad marketplace — it's a food delivery company, and these drones are being built from the ground up for that single use case.

FAA Part 135 certification is a major regulatory milestone, but real-world hurdles remain. Battery range, restrictions on flying over populated areas, and adverse weather conditions are still hard constraints. What's clear, however, is DoorDash's strategic intent: it is committing significant capital to owning its autonomous delivery infrastructure end-to-end, cutting its dependence on third-party partners and bringing the last mile under its direct control.

Industry implications

DoorDash's move is not happening in a vacuum. The drone delivery market is rapidly consolidating: Alphabet already operates Wing commercially on three continents, Zipline expanded from medical deliveries to retail, and Amazon Prime Air resumed operations after years of regulatory silence. What sets DoorDash apart is its logistics scale: 6 million restaurant partners and tens of millions of monthly orders in the US alone. If the company successfully integrates drones into this mesh, the impact on food delivery will be comparable to the introduction of real-time tracking — a change that seemed cosmetic until it became ubiquitous.

The open question is whether the in-house drone model will pay off. Building a fleet, ground infrastructure, and navigation systems from scratch is expensive, and DoorDash has not released financial projections for DoorDash Air. But the company appears to bet that vertical control — from order to aerial delivery — is worth the long-term investment.
