Epic Games Store: Cardpocalypse and Albion Online Epic Mage Bundle (Aug 20–27)
The new weekly free games lineup at the Epic Games Store arrives with two notably different titles. First, Cardpocalypse — a collectible card game RPG with an engaging narrative set in the 1990s — is available for claiming through August 27. Created by 25th Reboot, the game follows twelve-year-old Jess, who accidentally discovers that her favorite card game is being used as a cover for a government conspiracy to ban it forever. The narrative structure, which weaves together mystery and card battles, recalls the aesthetic and thrill of collecting Pokémon cards, but with a much more mature and satirical plot about the power popular culture wields over younger generations.
Alongside Cardpocalypse, Epic is also distributing the Epic Mage Bundle for Albion Online, the sandbox MMORPG from Sandbox Interactive. The package includes exclusive cosmetic sets, mount skins, and progression boosters — purely cosmetic content that does not affect the game's competitive balance. Albion Online, already free on the Epic Games Store, has established itself as one of the longest-running sandbox MMOs of the modern era, with a player-driven economy and a lifecycle that has spanned well over a decade of releases and updates.
PlayStation Plus Essential: Dying Light 2, Big Walk, and Signalis (Aug 4–31)
The three monthly PlayStation Plus games for August arrived on August 4 and remain available through the end of the month. Dying Light 2: Stay Human: Reloaded Edition is the definitive version of the first-person parkour survival horror that became the genre benchmark — now with all DLC included, including The Last Leader expansion and the Hellraid mode. The Dying Light franchise, created by Techland, evolved from a direct Dead Space competitor into one of the most distinctive action-survival titles around, with its day-night cycle shaping combat pacing in a nearly revolutionary way.
Big Walk, an indie game from Brazilian studio Cococore, is an interactive meditation on walking, silence, and observation. The player traverses rural paths in a minimalist 3D world, with no explicit objectives or challenge mechanics — only the contemplative experience of walking and observing the environment. Big Walk was one of the surprise highlights of the 2026 Game Developers Choice Awards, recognized for its ability to transform something as simple as walking into a profoundly meaningful experience.
Signalis, the psychological horror game in pixel art by Rosecardinal, remains one of the most atmospheric experiences in the genre. With a fragmented narrative exploring themes of identity, memory, and loss, Signalis combines intricate puzzle gameplay and item collection that creates constant tension, perfectly complementing the visually desolate world.
Prime Gaming (Amazon Luna): Steelrising, Royal Romances, and more (August)
Prime Gaming's August rotation (now integrated with Amazon Luna) features nine titles distributed across four weeks. Starting August 20, subscribers can now claim Royal Romances: Forbidden Magic (a tile-matching puzzle with fantasy narrative) and Spray Paint Simulator (a virtual urban art simulator). Before that, the first five games in the rotation were already available: Right and Down, Hiveswap Friendsim, Pyramids and Aliens: Escape Room, Airship: Kingdoms Adrift, and the standout Steelrising — an action RPG featuring mecha combat set in 18th-century France, published by Focus Entertainment and developed by Spiders Studio.
Xbox Game Pass: Gears of War: E-Day Open Beta (Aug 6–10)
The Gears of War: E-Day open beta hit Xbox Game Pass between August 6 and 10, giving Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers early access to test the next chapter in Microsoft's iconic franchise. Developed by The Coalition, the beta let players test the competitive multiplayer mode ahead of the official release, expected October 6, 2026. The return of Gears of War marks an important strategic moment for Xbox Game Studios — after years of aggressive expansion in indie and AAA games, the franchise remains one of Microsoft's few pillars for competitive first-person shooters, a direct rival to Call of Duty.
The open beta was a strategic decision from Microsoft: allowing broad community feedback before the final release helps identify balance issues that, in competitive games, can cause significant reputational damage. Gears of War: E-Day keeps the franchise's DNA — visceral combat, tactical cover, and character-driven storytelling — but adds movement mechanics that seek to balance the traditionally slower approach with expectations from players accustomed to modern shooters.
